Man, where to begin with this one. There was so much build-up for this book, and yet, to be honest, I almost didn’t pick it up. In the end, I couldn’t let a Schwab book slip by me; I’m happy I read it, but…well. Let’s get into it.

It's that time of year, readers - the time of lists and recaps, of bests and worsts. Below are my top ten SFF books of 2017!
After reading (and immensely enjoying) V.E. Schwab's Shades of Magic series, I've begun a tour through her other books. The first one I decided to pick up was Vicious, in part because I have a deep and abiding love of villains (and in part because she's working on the sequel right now). It will shock no one, then, to learn that I'm now harboring a crush on Victor Vale.
As I wrote a few weeks ago, A Conjuring of Light was my most anticipated book of 2017. Both of Schwab's previous books in the series were wonderful reads with a fully developed world(s), nuanced characters, clever magic and terrifying villains. It will shock no one to learn that the conclusion to the Shades of Magic series is no different.
Since I forgot to write a Best Of list for 2016, I decided to put together a list of all the books I'm super excited about this year. Most of them are sequels to books I've read previously (I'm sure I will find some lovely new authors and books to sweep me off my feet at some point), but these are the books currently at the shut-up-and-take-my-money level of excitement.
I guess I'm getting into a bad habit of thinking books are standalones when they aren't. That was the case for City of Stairs (now with sequel City of Blades) and it's also the case for V.E. Schwab's earlier novel A Darker Shade of Magic. A Darker Shade ranked very highly on my list of top books read year, so when I finally discovered (in January) that a sequel was coming out (in February), I marked my calendar to purchase it.
